What is Psalms 47 about?

Still among the sons of Korah, the praise widens from the city to all the earth. Every people is summoned to clap and shout, for the LORD Most High is a great King over all the earth who has subdued nations under His people. God has gone up with a shout, ascending His throne as the princes of the peoples gather to Him. The song lifts Israel's worship toward the day when the King of all the earth reigns openly, a hope fulfilled in the ascended Christ.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Oh clap your hands, all ye peoples; Shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
2For Jehovah Most High is terrible; He is a great King over all the earth.
3He subdueth peoples under us, And nations under our feet.
4He chooseth our inheritance for us, The glory of Jacob whom he loved. [Selah
5God is gone up with a shout, Jehovah with the sound of a trumpet.
6Sing praises to God, sing praises: Sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
7For God is the King of all the earth: Sing ye praises with understanding.
8God reigneth over the nations: God sitteth upon his holy throne.
9The princes of the peoples are gathered together To bethe people of the God of Abraham; For the shields of the earth belong unto God: He is greatly exalted.
