What is Psalms 150 about?

Closing the whole Psalter, this final psalm is one unbroken call to praise God in His sanctuary and in the firmament of His power. It summons His people to praise Him for His mighty acts and His excellent greatness, with trumpet and harp, timbrel and dance, stringed instruments and organs, and both loud and high-sounding cymbals. The last word widens to all creation, that everything which has breath should praise the LORD. So the book of Israel's prayers and praises ends where it has always been leading, in the unending worship of the God who is its beginning and its end.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

4Praise him with timbrel and dance: Praise him with stringed instruments and pipe.
5Praise him with loud cymbals: Praise him with high sounding cymbals.
6Let everything that hath breath praise Jehovah. Praise ye Jehovah.
