What is Psalms 95 about?

'O come, let us sing unto the LORD' summons the congregation to worship the great King above all gods, in whose hand are the deep places of the earth and the strength of the hills. As the maker and shepherd of His people, He is worthy of joyful praise and of humble kneeling before Him. Yet the psalm turns sharply to warning, recalling how the fathers hardened their hearts at Meribah and provoked the LORD, so that He swore they would not enter His rest. Taken up later in Hebrews as a call not to harden the heart today, it sets worship and warning side by side, pressing the hearer to hear God's voice while it is still called today.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Oh come, let us sing unto Jehovah; Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; Let us make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
3For Jehovah is a great God, And a great King above all gods.
4In his hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the mountains are his also.
5The sea is his, and he made it; And his hands formed the dry land.
6Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker:
7For he is our God, And we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day, oh that ye would hear his voice!
8Harden not your heart, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness;
9When your fathers tempted me, Proved me, and saw my work.
10Forty years long was I grieved with that generation, And said, It is a people that do err in their heart, And they have not known my ways:
11Wherefore I sware in my wrath, That they should not enter into my rest.
