What is Psalms 24 about?

Composed as the ark of God is borne up to Zion, David's psalm declares that the earth is the LORD's and all who dwell in it. He asks who may ascend the hill of the LORD and stand in His holy place, answering that it is the one with clean hands and a pure heart. The ancient gates are then summoned to lift up their heads that the King of glory may enter, the LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Following the question of who may approach a holy God, the psalm answers with the glory of the King who comes to dwell among His people, anticipating the Lord who enters His temple.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1The earth is Jehovah’s, and the fulness thereof; The world, and they that dwell therein.
2For he hath founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the floods.
3Who shall ascend into the hill of Jehovah? And who shall stand in his holy place?
4He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; Who hath not lifted up his soul unto falsehood, And hath not sworn deceitfully.
5He shall receive a blessing from Jehovah, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6This is the generation of them that seek after him, That seek thy face, even Jacob. [Selah
7Lift up your heads, O ye gates; And be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors: And the King of glory will come in.
8Who is the King of glory? Jehovah strong and mighty, Jehovah mighty in battle.
9Lift up your heads, O ye gates; Yea, lift them up, ye everlasting doors: And the King of glory will come in.
