What is Psalms 134 about?

As the pilgrimage draws to its close, the last of the Songs of Ascents turns to the servants of the LORD who by night keep watch in His house. It calls them to bless Him and to lift up their hands toward the sanctuary, and it answers their praise with a benediction from Zion: may the LORD who made heaven and earth bless them out of His holy city. The scene of nighttime worship completes the ascent to Jerusalem, sending the pilgrims home under God's blessing. Such worship at the earthly sanctuary anticipates the unceasing praise of God's servants before His throne.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.
