What is Psalms 19 about?

The sky is not silent. Above every people and every tongue the heavens pour out speech without words, day handing the testimony to night, and the sun crosses the whole vault like a bridegroom from his chamber, rejoicing as a strong man to run his course. Beside that wordless witness David sets a second and clearer voice: the law of the LORD, perfect and sure and right, reviving the soul, making the simple wise, more to be desired than gold and sweeter than honey from the comb. The same God who wrote His glory across the firmament has spoken again in words a servant can keep, and the psalm turns those words inward, from the wide heavens to the hidden heart, until the only fit answer is a prayer to be cleansed of secret faults. Two books, one Author: the world He made and the word He gave, meeting at last in the mouth and the meditation of a man who calls Him his strength and his redeemer.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament showeth his handiwork.
2Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night showeth knowledge.
3There is no speech nor language; Their voice is not heard.
4Their line is gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
5Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoiceth as a strong man to run his course.
6His going forth is from the end of the heavens, And his circuit unto the ends of it; And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
7The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple.
8The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever: The ordinances of Jehovah are true, and righteous altogether.
10More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb.
11Moreover by them is thy servant warned: In keeping them there is great reward.
12Who can discern his errors? Clear thou me from hidden faults.
13Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me: Then shall I be upright, And I shall be clear from great transgression.
14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in thy sight, O Jehovah, my rock, and my redeemer.
