What is Psalms 61 about?

David cries from the end of the earth, his heart overwhelmed and far from the sanctuary he loves. He asks to be led to the rock that is higher than himself and to abide for ever in God's tabernacle under the shelter of His wings. Praying as king, he asks that his life and throne be prolonged before God from generation to generation, that he may daily perform his vows. The petition rests on the covenant God made with David's house, an everlasting throne finally secured in Christ the eternal King.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Hear my cry, O God; Attend unto my prayer.
2From the end of the earth will I call unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3For thou hast been a refuge for me, A strong tower from the enemy.
4I will dwell in thy tabernacle for ever: I will take refuge in the covert of thy wings. [Selah
5For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: Thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.
6Thou wilt prolong the king’s life; His years shall be as many generations.
7He shall abide before God for ever: Oh prepare lovingkindness and truth, that they may preserve him.
8So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, That I may daily perform my vows.
