What is Psalms 29 about?

David turns from personal need to the majesty of God revealed in the storm, calling the mighty to ascribe glory to the LORD. Seven times the voice of the LORD sounds, over the waters, breaking the cedars, shaking the wilderness, so that in His temple everyone speaks of His glory. The psalm ends with the LORD enthroned as King forever, giving strength to His people and blessing them with peace. Set against the raw power of creation, His sovereign rule assures the worshiping people that their King commands all things for their good.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Ascribe unto Jehovah, O ye sons of the mighty, Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength.
2Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name; Worship Jehovah in holy array.
3The voice of Jehovah is upon the waters: The God of glory thundereth, Even Jehovah upon many waters.
4The voice of Jehovah is powerful; The voice of Jehovah is full of majesty.
5The voice of Jehovah breaketh the cedars; Yea, Jehovah breaketh in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild-ox.
7The voice of Jehovah cleaveth the flames of fire.
8The voice of Jehovah shaketh the wilderness; Jehovah shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
