What is Psalms 100 about?

A Psalm of thanksgiving gathers the preceding themes into one clear summons for all lands to make a joyful noise unto the LORD and serve Him with gladness. The people are to know that the LORD is God, that He made us and not we ourselves, and that we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. They are called to enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise, blessing His name because the LORD is good and His mercy and truth endure to all generations. Standing as the crown of the kingship psalms, this brief hymn gives the whole worshiping community its enduring language of grateful praise before the eternal King.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Make a joyful noise unto Jehovah, all ye lands.
2Serve Jehovah with gladness: Come before his presence with singing.
3Know ye that Jehovah, he is God: It is he that hath made us, and we are his; We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, And into his courts with praise: Give thanks unto him, and bless his name.
5For Jehovah is good; his lovingkindness endureth for ever, And his faithfulness unto all generations.
