What is Psalms 15 about?

Having exposed the corruption of all who forget God, the fifteenth psalm asks who then may abide in the LORD's tabernacle and dwell in His holy hill. David answers with a portrait of the one who walks uprightly and works righteousness, who speaks truth in his heart, does no evil to his neighbor, keeps his word even to his own hurt, and takes no bribe against the innocent. Such a one, the psalm concludes, shall never be moved. The question and its answer set the standard of true fellowship with a holy God, a standard fully met only in Christ, in whom His people are received.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Jehovah, who shall sojourn in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, And speaketh truth in his heart;
3He that slandereth not with his tongue, Nor doeth evil to his friend, Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor;
4In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honoreth them that fear Jehovah; He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not;
5He that putteth not out his money to interest, Nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.
