What is Psalms 130 about?

Out of the depths this Song of Ascents cries to the LORD, one of the great penitential psalms of the Psalter. If the LORD should mark iniquities none could stand, but there is forgiveness with Him that He may be feared, and so the soul waits for Him more than watchmen wait for the morning. Israel is called to hope in the LORD, for with Him is mercy and plenteous redemption. The promise that He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities reaches its fulfillment in the redemption from sin accomplished by Christ.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Jehovah.
2Lord, hear my voice: Let thine ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications.
3If thou, Jehovah, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
4But there is forgiveness with thee, That thou mayest be feared.
5I wait for Jehovah, my soul doth wait, And in his word do I hope.
6My soul waiteth for the Lord More than watchmen wait for the morning; Yea, more thanwatchmen for the morning.
7O Israel, hope in Jehovah; For with Jehovah there is lovingkindness, And with him is plenteous redemption.
8And he will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.
