What is Psalms 3 about?

David composed the third psalm when he fled from his own son Absalom, hunted from Jerusalem while many rose up to say there was no help for him in God. Surrounded by enemies, he confesses that the LORD is a shield about him, his glory and the lifter of his head, and testifies that he lay down and slept and awoke because the LORD sustained him. He calls on God to arise and save, and rests in the truth that salvation belongs to the LORD. As the first of the great laments, it shows faith speaking in the middle of real danger, giving the persecuted people of God words to pray when foes press in.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Jehovah, how are mine adversaries increased! Many are they that rise up against me.
2Many there are that say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. [Selah
3But thou, O Jehovah, art a shield about me; My glory, and the lifter up of my head.
4I cry unto Jehovah with my voice, And he answereth me out of his holy hill. [Selah
5I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for Jehovah sustaineth me.
6I will not be afraid of ten thousands of the people That have set themselves against me round about.
7Arise, O Jehovah; save me, O my God: For thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; Thou hast broken the teeth of the wicked.
