What is Psalms 125 about?

From past rescue the pilgrims turn to present security, confessing that those who trust in the LORD are as immovable as Mount Zion. As the mountains stand round about Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people from henceforth even for ever, that the rod of the wicked may not rest on the righteous. The psalm prays that God would do good to the upright in heart while the crooked are led away with the workers of iniquity. Peace upon Israel is the settled portion of all who lean on the LORD.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1They that trust in Jehovah Are as mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abideth for ever.
2As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, So Jehovah is round about his people From this time forth and for evermore.
3For the sceptre of wickedness shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; That the righteous put not forth their hands unto iniquity.
4Do good, O Jehovah, unto those that are good, And to them that are upright in their hearts.
5But as for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, Jehovah will lead them forth with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.
