What is Psalms 128 about?

Continuing the theme of the God-blessed home, this Song of Ascents pronounces blessed everyone who fears the LORD and walks in His ways. Such a one eats the fruit of his labor, his wife is as a fruitful vine and his children as olive plants around his table, and the blessing comes to him out of Zion. He is promised the good of Jerusalem all his days and to see his children's children. The ordinary flourishing of the faithful household is bound up with the peace of God's city and people.

Historical backdrop

These are the songbook of a nation, sung across a thousand years of Israel's worship, from Moses in the wilderness to the exiles returned from Babylon. They were carried from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the second temple rebuilt under Persia, set to the lyre and the harp and the clash of cymbals in the courts of the LORD.

1Blessed is every one that feareth Jehovah, That walketh in his ways.
2For thou shalt eat the labor of thy hands: Happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
3Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine, In the innermost parts of thy house; Thy children like olive plants, Round about thy table.
4Behold, thus shall the man be blessed That feareth Jehovah.
5Jehovah bless thee out of Zion: And see thou the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
6Yea, see thou thy children’s children. Peace be upon Israel.
