What is Isaiah 12 about?

Closing the messianic songs of these chapters, the redeemed lift their voices in that day: O LORD, I will praise thee; though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away. God has become their salvation, their strength and their song, so that with joy they draw water from the wells of salvation. They cry out and shout, for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of Zion. The brief hymn gives voice to the joy of the saved remnant, a foretaste of the salvation the whole book anticipates.

Historical backdrop

Assyria was the terror of the age, its armies driving west with siege ramps and cavalry, dragging conquered peoples into exile. In Isaiah's lifetime the northern kingdom fell and vanished, its ten tribes deported, and Sennacherib's host came up against the fortified cities of Judah until Jerusalem alone stood, surrounded. Isaiah prophesied in that shadow, in the court of Jerusalem across four kings, while the largest empire the world had yet seen closed its hand on the small kingdoms of the Levant.

1And in that day thou shalt say, I will give thanks unto thee, O Jehovah; for though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away and thou comfortest me.

2Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid: for Jehovah, even Jehovah, is my strength and song; and he is become my salvation.

3Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. 4And in that day shall ye say, Give thanks unto Jehovah, call upon his name, declare his doings among the peoples, make mention that his name is exalted. 5Sing unto Jehovah; for he hath done excellent things: let this be known in all the earth. 6Cry aloud and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion; for great in the midst of thee is the Holy One of Israel.
