Attaining his thirtieth year, he, under the admonition of the discourses of Ambrose, discovered more and more the truth of the Catholic doctrine, and deliberates as to the better regulation of his life. Moreover, the same sacred and holy Synod, considering that no small utility may accrue to the Church of God, if it be made known which out of all the Latin editions now in circulation of the sacred books is to be held as authentic, ordains and declares that the said old and Vulgate edition, which by the lengthened usage of so many ages has been approved of in the Church itself,…
The minister shall begin with a confession of our sins, desiring the congregation to join with him both in heart and voice. After the confession, the minister shall pray for illumination of the Holy Spirit, that the Word may be rightly divided and rightly received. Then shall follow the reading and exposition of the Scriptures, which is the chief part of worship.
Q. What must you know to live and die in the joy of this comfort? A. Three things: first, how great my sin and misery are; second, how I am set free from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to thank God for such deliverance.
We affirm that the text of Scripture is to be interpreted by grammatico-historical exegesis, taking account of its literary forms and devices, and that Scripture is to interpret Scripture. We deny the legitimacy of any treatment of the text or quest for sources lying behind it that leads to relativizing, dehistoricizing, or discounting its teaching.
We will that preachers and people cultivate a spirit of mutual forbearance, pray more and dispute less, and that ministers study the Scriptures carefully rather than relying on human confessions and catechisms for their theology. The Bible is sufficient for faith and practice without need of human supplements.
