§728Jesus does not reveal the Holy Spirit fully, until he himself has been glorified through his Death and Resurrection. Nevertheless, little by little he alludes to him even in his teaching of the multitudes, as when he reveals that his own flesh will be food for the life of the world.110 He also alludes to the Spirit in speaking to Nicodemus,111 to the Samaritan woman,112 and to …
§2766But Jesus does not give us a formula to repeat mechanically.14 As in every vocal prayer, it is through the Word of God that the Holy Spirit teaches the children of God to pray to their Father. Jesus not only gives us the words of our filial prayer; at the same time he gives us the Spirit by whom these words become in us "spirit and life."15 Even more, the proof and possibility …
I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger. Calvin expounds the feeding of the five thousand as a sign pointing to Christ as the true bread from heaven. The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Whoever eats the flesh of the Son of Man and drinks his blood has eternal life. Calvin insists this is spiritual feeding by fai…
39. For where at all have they found in divine Scripture, or from whom have they heard, that there is another Word and another Wisdom besides this Son, that they should frame to themselves such a doctrine? True, indeed, it is written, 'Are not My words like fire, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces Jeremiah 23:29?' and in the Proverbs, 'I will make known My words u…
The sacraments are signs of a sacred thing, namely of grace already given. They do not confer grace but testify that grace has been given. Baptism is the sign of initiation by which we pledge ourselves to a new life. The Eucharist is a thanksgiving and remembrance, not a repetition of Christ's sacrifice. The body of Christ is not locally present in the elements.
Q. How does the Lord's Supper differ from the Roman Catholic Mass? A. The Lord's Supper declares to us that our sins have been completely forgiven through the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ which he himself finished on the cross once for all. It also declares to us that the Holy Spirit grafts us into Christ, who with his very body is now in heaven at the right hand of the Father…
God Who is good and altogether good and more than good, Who is goodness throughout, by reason of the exceeding riches of His goodness did not suffer Himself, that is His nature, only to be good, with no other to participate therein, but because of this He made first the spiritual and heavenly powers: next the visible and sensible universe: next man with his spiritual and sentie…
Basil argues that the Spirit gives life to all — a divine prerogative. It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. The law of the Spirit of life has set believers free. A creature cannot give what belongs only to the Creator; therefore the Spirit is uncreated God.
The Spirit is called the Lord and Giver of Life. It is the Spirit who raised Christ from the dead, the Spirit who gives life to our mortal bodies, the Spirit who makes the letter of the law come alive. To give life is the exclusive prerogative of God — no creature can bestow what it does not possess in its own right. Since the Spirit gives life, He must be God.
