§694Water. the symbolism of water signifies the Holy Spirit's action in Baptism, since after the invocation of the Holy Spirit it becomes the efficacious sacramental sign of new birth: just as the gestation of our first birth took place in water, so the water of Baptism truly signifies that our birth into the divine life is given to us in the Holy Spirit. As "by one Spirit we were …
§790Believers who respond to God's word and become members of Christ's Body, become intimately united with him: "In that body the life of Christ is communicated to those who believe, and who, through the sacraments, are united in a hidden and real way to Christ in his Passion and glorification."220 This is especially true of Baptism, which unites us to Christ's death and Resurrecti…
§798The Holy Spirit is "the principle of every vital and truly saving action in each part of the Body."247 He works in many ways to build up the whole Body in charity:248 by God's Word "which is able to build you up";249 by Baptism, through which he forms Christ's Body;250 by the sacraments, which give growth and healing to Christ's members; by "the grace of the apostles, which hol…

1. God will not have us listen to the words and sentences contained in the Scriptures carelessly, but with much attention. This is why the blessed David has prefixed in many places to his Psalms the title for understanding, and has said, Open Thou my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Your Law. Psalm 32:42, etc.; Psalm 119:18 And after him his son again shows that w…
§22Actually only those are to be included as members of the Church who have been baptized and profess the true faith, and who have not been so unfortunate as to separate themselves from the unity of the Body, or been excluded by legitimate authority for grave faults committed. "For in one spirit" says the Apostle, "were we all baptized into one Body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whet…
If anyone saith that the sacraments of the New Law do not contain the grace which they signify, or that they do not confer that grace on those who do not place an obstacle thereunto — let him be anathema.
Q. What do you understand by the communion of saints? A. First, that believers one and all, as members of this community, share in Christ and in all his treasures and gifts. Second, that each member should consider it a duty to use these gifts readily and cheerfully for the service and enrichment of the other members.
We believe the members of the Catholic Church to be all the faithful, and only the faithful; who, having received the blameless faith of the Saviour Christ, and holding fast to the same in true confession, although some of them may be guilty of all manner of sins, are still members of the Church. For if they were not members, they would not be subject to the Church's discipline…
We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Church is properly the assembly of saints and true believers. However, since in this life many hypocrites and evil persons are mingled with believers, the sacraments remain efficacious even when administered by unworthy ministers, for they are instituted by Christ. The true unity of the Church requires only agreement on the Gospel rightly preached and the sacraments rightly…
The holy catholic Church, the communion of saints.
Cyprian declares that one cannot have God as Father who does not have the Church as Mother. As there was no salvation outside Noah's ark, there is no salvation outside the one church. The church is the bride of Christ — He loved her and gave Himself for her. To separate from the church is to separate from Christ.
