Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters. This chapter is a free and universal invitation of the gospel. God offers living water, bread, and wine without money and without price. The everlasting covenant of the sure mercies of David is extended to all peoples. God's thoughts are higher than our thoughts and his ways higher than our ways — the mystery of his grace exc…
Blessed are the meek. Meekness holds a middle place between anger and insensibility. The meek man is not the man who never feels anger, but who feels it only when and how and to what degree the occasion requires. Blessed also are they that do hunger and thirst after righteousness — not merely the righteousness which is imputed, but that which is imparted: holiness of heart and …
Nevertheless, all who are called through the gospel are called earnestly. For God earnestly and most genuinely reveals in his Word what is pleasing to him: that those who are called should come to him. He also earnestly promises rest for their souls and eternal life to all who come to him and believe.
Spurgeon pleads with sinners to come to Christ and with the Church to go out after them. The master's command to "compel them to come in" is a commission of urgency — not force, but earnest, passionate, unrelenting persuasion. The gospel invitation goes to the highways and hedges, to the poor and the outcast, to those who think themselves too wicked or too worthless. No one is …
