§64Through the prophets, God forms his people in the hope of salvation, in the expectation of a new and everlasting Covenant intended for all, to be written on their hearts.22 The prophets proclaim a radical redemption of the People of God, purification from all their infidelities, a salvation which will include all the nations.23 Above all, the poor and humble of the Lord will be…
§440Jesus accepted Peter's profession of faith, which acknowledged him to be the Messiah, by announcing the imminent Passion of the Son of Man.40 He unveiled the authentic content of his messianic kingship both in the transcendent identity of the Son of Man "who came down from heaven", and in his redemptive mission as the suffering Servant: "The Son of Man came not to be served but…
§579This principle of integral observance of the Law not only in letter but in spirit was dear to the Pharisees. By giving Israel this principle they had led many Jews of Jesus' time to an extreme religious zeal.334 This zeal, were it not to lapse into "hypocritical" casuistry,335 could only prepare the People for the unprecedented intervention of God through the perfect fulfilment…

Who hath believed our report? He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. This chapter is the summit of Old Testament prophecy concerning the suffering Messiah. Calvin shows that every detail — the vicarious bearing of our griefs, the chastisement of our peace, the stripes by which we are healed, the silence before his shearers, the death amo…

Q. What kind of mediator and deliverer should we look for then? A. One who is truly human and truly righteous, yet more powerful than all creatures, that is, one who is also true God.
Q. Why must the mediator be truly human and truly righteous? A. God's justice demands that human nature, which has sinned, must pay for its sin; but a sinner could never pay for others.
Q. Are all people then saved through Christ just as they were lost through Adam? A. No. Only those are saved who by true faith are grafted into Christ and accept all his blessings.
The Synod rejects the errors of those who teach that God the Father appointed his Son to death on the cross without a fixed and definite plan to save anyone by name, so that the necessity, usefulness, and worth of what Christ acquired by his death could have stood intact and altogether perfect, complete, and whole, even if the redemption that was acquired had never in actual fa…
