1. Paul wishing to show the difference between the New and Old [Covenant], scatters it everywhere; and shoots from afar, and noises it abroad, and prepares beforehand. For at once even from the introduction, he laid down this saying, that to them indeed He spoke by prophets, but to us by the Son c. i. 1, 2, and to them at sundry times and in various manners, but to us through t…
I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren. Calvin shows Paul's anguish over Israel's rejection, but insists that God's word has not failed. Not all who descend from Israel are Israel. God's purpose according to election stands: Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. The potter has power over the clay to make one vessel unto honour and another unto d…
You alone, in contrast with all others, have attacked the real thing, that is, the essential issue. You have not worried me with those extraneous issues about the Papacy, purgatory, indulgences and such like — trifles, rather than issues — in which almost all to date have sought my blood. You, and you alone, have seen the hinge on which all turns, and aimed for the vital spot.

The Synod rejects the errors of those who teach that God's good pleasure and purpose, which Scripture mentions in its teaching of election, does not involve God's choosing certain particular people rather than others, but involves God's choosing, out of all possible conditions (including the works of the law) or out of the whole order of things, the intrinsically unworthy act o…
The Synod rejects the errors of those who teach that in election to faith a prerequisite condition is that human beings should rightly use the light of nature, be upright, small, humble, and disposed to eternal life, as though election depended to some extent on these factors.
God does not owe this grace to anyone. For what could God owe to one who has nothing to give that can be paid back? Indeed, what could God owe to one who has nothing of one's own to give but sin and falsehood? Therefore the person who receives this grace owes and gives eternal gratitude to God alone; the person who does not receive it either does not care at all about these spi…
