The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. Christ himself read these words in the synagogue at Nazareth and declared "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." Calvin shows that the anointing of the Messiah by the Spirit is the foundation of his prophetic, priestly, and kingly office. He comes to bind…
Q. Why is he called Christ, meaning anointed? A. Because he has been ordained by God the Father and has been anointed with the Holy Spirit to be our chief prophet and teacher who perfectly reveals to us the secret counsel and will of God for our deliverance; our only high priest who has set us free by the one sacrifice of his body, and who continually pleads our cause with the …
1. It is now the proper place to show that the very name Jesus and also the name Christ were honored by the ancient prophets beloved of God. 2. Moses was the first to make known the name of Christ as a name especially august and glorious.
