§607The desire to embrace his Father's plan of redeeming love inspired Jesus' whole life,418 for his redemptive passion was the very reason for his Incarnation. and so he asked, "and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour."419 and again, "Shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?"420 From the cross, just befo…
§624"By the grace of God" Jesus tasted death "for every one".459 In his plan of salvation, God ordained that his Son should not only "die for our sins"460 but should also "taste death", experience the condition of death, the separation of his soul from his body, between the time he expired on the cross and the time he was raised from the dead. the state of the dead Christ is the my…
§730At last Jesus' hour arrives:117 he commends his spirit into the Father's hands118 at the very moment when by his death he conquers death, so that, "raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,"119 he might immediately give the Holy Spirit by "breathing" on his disciples.120 From this hour onward, the mission of Christ and the Spirit becomes the mission of the Church: "As th…

Therefore they say these things publicly, and crucified thieves …
Chapter 41.—Of the Blessing Which Jacob Promised in Judah His Son. If, on account of the Christian people in whom the city of God sojourns in the earth, we look for the flesh of Christ in the seed of Abraham, setting aside the sons of the concubines, we have Isaac; if in the seed of Isaac, setting aside Esau, who is also Edom, we have Jacob, who also is Israel; if in the seed o…
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. Calvin treats the passion narrative with deep reverence. The inscription "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" was, despite Pilate's intention, a true proclamation. The seamless coat for which the soldiers cast lots fulfills Psalm 22. Christ's cry "It is finished" is not a groan of defeat but a shout of triumph — the work of r…
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
"It is finished" — these three words contain the whole gospel. The work of redemption is complete: the debt is paid, the law is satisfied, the curse is lifted, the way to God is opened. Spurgeon insists that nothing can be added to a finished work. To claim that human effort, religious ritual, or moral improvement must supplement Christ's sacrifice is to say that His blood was …
