Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Christian freedom does not mean license to sin. It means freedom from the curse of the law, from the wrath of God, from sin, death, and the p…
'Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.' See Gal. v. 1. Christian liberty is not a carnal thing — it is not liberty to sin, but liberty from the condemnation of the law, from the wrath of God, from death and hell. Christ has set us free, not so that we may do what we please, but so that we may…
However, just as by the fall human beings did not cease to be human, endowed with intellect and will, and just as sin, which has spread through the whole human race, did not abolish the nature of the human race but distorted and spiritually killed it, so also this divine grace of regeneration does not act in people as if they were blocks and stones; nor does it abolish the will…
Unto the churches belonging to Christ there are requisite rites and ceremonies; yet a moderation is to be used therein, lest any should think that divine worship consists in them. If in the churches there are ceremonies which serve propriety and order, such are not hereby abolished. But we exhort men to be watchful lest among the godly ceremonies of the Church superstition cree…
Luther argues that monastic chapters and religious orders, insofar as they were founded on the notion that monastic life is a state of perfection superior to ordinary Christian life, are contrary to the chief article. They obscure the all-sufficiency of Christ's merit by teaching that human vows and works of supererogation earn merit before God. The Christian's vocation in the …
We will that the church of Christ resume her native right of internal government, rejecting all human legislation and creeds that are not based upon the authority of Scripture. The Gospel of Christ is free, and no humanly-devised standards should bind the conscience or restrict the liberties of the people of God.
Paul declares that "the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Ambrose argues that this identification of the Spirit with the Lord proves His full divinity. The freedom the Spirit gives is not political but spiritual — freedom from sin, from the law of death, and from slavery to the passions. This is the freedom for which Christ set us free,…
