Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

§2515Etymologically, "concupiscence" can refer to any intense form of human desire. Christian theology has given it a particular meaning: the movement of the sensitive appetite contrary to the operation of the human reason. the apostle St. Paul identifies it with the rebellion of the "flesh" against the "spirit."301 Concupiscence stems from the disobedience of the first sin. It unse…
1. A great matter, beloved, a great matter it is to preside over a Church: a matter needing wisdom and courage as great as that of which Christ speaks, that a man should lay down his life for the sheep, and never leave them deserted or naked; that he should stand against the wolf nobly. For in this the shepherd differs from the hireling; the one always looks to his own safety, …
§12When one reflects on the origin of this doctrine, there come to mind at once the words of the Apostle: "Where sin abounded, grace did more abound."[6] All know that the father of the whole human race was constituted by God in so exalted a state that he was to hand on to his posterity, together with earthly existence, the heavenly life of divine grace. But after the unhappy fall…
Did the union of the Word Incarnate take place in the nature? Did it take place in the Person? Did it take place in the suppositum or hypostasis? Is the Person or hypostasis of Christ composite after the Incarnation? Did any union of body and soul take place in Christ? Was the human nature united to the Word accidentally? Is the union itself something created? Is it the same as…
The holy Synod declares first that, for the correct and sound understanding of the doctrine of Justification, it is necessary that each one recognize and confess that, whereas all men had lost their innocence in the prevarication of Adam, having become unclean, and, as the apostle says, by nature children of wrath, they were so far the servants of sin and under the power of the…
You must be convinced not only of your actual sins but of your original sin. We are conceived and born in sin. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart is faint. We are by nature children of wrath, dead in trespasses and sins. Until a man is truly sensible of his original depravity, he can never come to a true knowledge of himself.
Q. Can you live up to all this perfectly? A. No. I have a natural tendency to hate God and my neighbor.
Canons of Dort · 3 passages
The Synod rejects the errors of those who teach that in election to faith a prerequisite condition is that human beings should rightly use the light of nature, be upright, small, humble, and disposed to eternal life, as though election depended to some extent on these factors.
The Synod rejects the errors of those who teach that all people have been received into the state of reconciliation and into the grace of the covenant, so that no one on account of original sin is liable to condemnation, or is to be condemned, but that all are free from the guilt of this sin. For this opinion conflicts with Scripture, which teaches that we are by nature childre…
Therefore, all people are conceived in sin and are born children of wrath, unfit for any saving good, inclined to evil, dead in their sins, and slaves to sin. Without the grace of the regenerating Holy Spirit they are neither willing nor able to return to God, to reform their distorted nature, or to dispose themselves to the reformation of it.
We believe that by the disobedience of Adam original sin has been spread through the whole human race. It is a corruption of the whole human nature—an inherited depravity which even infects small infants in their mother's womb, and the root which produces in humanity every sort of sin. It is therefore so vile and enormous in God's sight that it is enough to condemn the human ra…
Man was from the beginning created by God after the image of God, in righteousness and true holiness, good and upright. But when at the instigation of the serpent and by his own fault he abandoned goodness and righteousness, man became subject to sin, death and various calamities. And what he became by the fall, that is, subject to sin, death and various calamities, such are al…
Original sin is such a deep corruption of nature that no reason can understand it; it must be believed on the authority of Scripture. All that is born of flesh is flesh and is by nature a child of wrath. Neither works, law, nor human merit can remedy this condition — only the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
We believe that man was created in holiness, under the law of his Maker; but by voluntary transgression fell from that holy and happy state; in consequence of which all mankind are now sinners, not by constraint but choice; being by nature utterly void of that holiness required by the law of God, positively inclined to evil, and therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin…
