§578Jesus, Israel's Messiah and therefore the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, was to fulfil the Law by keeping it in its all embracing detail - according to his own words, down to "the least of these commandments".330 He is in fact the only one who could keep it perfectly.331 On their own admission the Jews were never able to observe the Law in its entirety without violating the…
§580The perfect fulfilment of the Law could be the work of none but the divine legislator, born subject to the Law in the person of the Son.337 In Jesus, the Law no longer appears engraved on tables of stone but "upon the heart" of the Servant who becomes "a covenant to the people", because he will "faithfully bring forth justice".338 Jesus fulfils the Law to the point of taking up…

Q. Will God permit such disobedience and rebellion to go unpunished? A. Certainly not. God is terribly angry about the sin we are born with as well as the sins we personally commit. As a just judge he punishes them now and in eternity. He has declared: Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the things written in the book of the law.
Q. Why can't the good we do make us right with God, or at least help make us right with him? A. Because the righteousness which can pass God's scrutiny must be entirely perfect and must in every way measure up to the divine law. But even our best works in this life are imperfect and stained with sin.
In this respect, what is true of the light of nature is true also of the Ten Commandments given by God through Moses specifically to the Jews. For human beings cannot obtain saving grace through the Decalogue, because, although it does expose the magnitude of their sin and increasingly convict them of their guilt, yet it does not offer a remedy or enable them to escape from the…
