2 Maccabees 8
2 Maccabees
Chapter 8
8
What is 2 Maccabees 8 about?
Judas Maccabeus gathers the scattered faithful into a small army and begins to strike the enemy by surprise, calling upon the Lord to remember the defiled temple and the blood of the martyrs. Nicanor, sent to crush the revolt, so counts on victory that he invites slave-dealers to buy the Jews in advance and thus raise the tribute owed to Rome. Judas heartens his outnumbered men with the word of God and the memory of past deliverances, and they rout the Seleucid force, sending Nicanor fleeing in disgrace to report the invincible ally who fought for the Jews. The chapter matters as the turning of the tide, ascribing the victory not to numbers or arms but to the mercy of God moved by the cries of His afflicted people.
