2 Maccabees 7
What is 2 Maccabees 7 about?
Seven brothers and their mother are arrested together and commanded to eat swine's flesh, and one by one the sons endure scourging, mutilation, and the fire rather than transgress the law of their fathers. Each brother meets death with a confession of hope, declaring that the King of the universe will raise them up to an everlasting renewal of life, and one affirms that God made all things out of nothing and will give back the bodies laid down for His sake. Their mother, watching all seven perish in a single day, strengthens each son in her native tongue and reasons that the Creator who formed them in the womb will in His mercy restore breath and life to them again. The chapter matters as the book's clearest reflection on the resurrection and the fullest portrait of its martyrs' courage, holding out the hope that death for God's sake is not the end.
