2 Maccabees 2

2
What is 2 Maccabees 2 about?

The second letter continues with the tradition that the prophet Jeremiah, at the time of the exile, hid the tent, the ark, and the altar of incense in a cave on the mountain Moses had climbed, sealing them until God should gather His people again. The compiler then steps forward in his own voice, explaining that he has condensed the five volumes of Jason of Cyrene into a single work, and he describes the labor and sweat of such an abridgment, asking his readers' patience where the telling is brief. He likens his task to a builder who decorates a house, content to leave exact detail to the original historian while he aims at the pleasure and profit of the reader. The chapter matters because it lays bare the book's method and aim plainly, presenting itself as a devout summary meant to move the heart toward reverence rather than a chronicle claiming completeness.
