2 Maccabees 13

13
What is 2 Maccabees 13 about?

Antiochus Eupator and Lysias return with an enormous army to crush Judea, and along the way the traitorous high priest Menelaus, whose greed had begun the temple's defilement, meets his end, cast to his death from a tower of ashes as a fitting recompense for his sacrileges. Judas commits the outcome to the Creator of the world and leads a daring night raid on the royal camp, throwing the enemy into confusion and gaining the advantage. Learning that the Jews were not easily broken, the king comes to terms and withdraws in peace, honoring the sanctuary. The chapter matters as another deliverance credited to God, and as the closing of accounts with Menelaus, whose punishment shows that betrayal of the holy things does not go unanswered.
