What is Wisdom 12 about?

Reflecting on the conquest of Canaan, the twelfth chapter explains why God punished the former inhabitants of the land only little by little, giving them room to repent even though He knew their wickedness was inbred. His restraint, the author argues, flows from a power so complete that He can afford to be lenient, and it teaches His own people that the just must also be kind. There is no God but Him who cares for all, and His sovereignty is shown as much in mercy as in strength. By joining God's might to His forbearance, the chapter deepens the book's portrait of a justice tempered by patience.

Historical backdrop

The book comes from Alexandria, the Greek city on the Nile that Alexander founded and the Ptolemies made the intellectual capital of the age. There the largest community of the dispersion lived in Greek, read its Scriptures in the Greek of the Septuagint, and argued philosophy beside the great library, all under the constant pull of a cultured paganism. Wisdom is written into that pressure, in the elegant Greek of a Jew who would not trade the God of his fathers for the wisdom of the Greeks.
