The sacraments are signs of a sacred thing, namely of grace already given. They do not confer grace but testify that grace has been given. Baptism is the sign of initiation by which we pledge ourselves to a new life. The Eucharist is a thanksgiving and remembrance, not a repetition of Christ's sacrifice.
