Gregory argues that souls not fully purified in this life undergo a process of purification after death. Each person's work will be tested by fire; if it survives, the builder receives a reward, but if burned up, the builder suffers loss yet is saved, though as through fire. God is like a refiner's fire, purging away the dross of sin.
