§1819Christian hope takes up and fulfills the hope of the chosen people which has its origin and model in the hope of Abraham, who was blessed abundantly by the promises of God fulfilled in Isaac, and who was purified by the test of the sacrifice.86 "Hoping against hope, he believed, and thus became the father of many nations."87
1. Beloved, let us not contend with violent men, but learn when the doing so brings no hurt to our virtue to give place to their evil counsels; for so all their hardihood is checked. 1. Great indeed was the faith of Abraham. For while in the case of Abel, and of Noah, and of Enoch, there was an opposition of reasonings only, and it was necessary to go beyond human reasonings; in this case it was necessary not only to go beyond human reasonings, but to manifest also something more. And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham. This is the most severe trial of faith recorded in Scripture. Abraham was commanded to sacrifice his only son — the son of promise, in whom all the promises of God were concentrated. His obedience was not blind or irrational, but rested on the persuasion that God could raise Isaac from the dead. The ram provide…
Josephus retells the Genesis narrative: creation, the fall of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, the genealogy from Adam to Noah, the flood, the tower of Babel, and the lives of Abraham and Isaac. He follows the biblical account closely but adds rationalizing explanations and draws on extra-biblical traditions.
Rashi explains that the test of the Akedah (the binding of Isaac) was for Abraham's benefit, not for God's information. God already knew Abraham's heart, but the test brought Abraham's latent faith into actuality, transforming potential virtue into demonstrated righteousness. This way, when God rewards Abraham, no one can say the reward was unearned — it was publicly proved.
