What is Esther 10 about?

A brief closing notes that King Ahasuerus lays a tribute upon the land and the isles of the sea, and that his acts of power together with the greatness of Mordecai are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia. Mordecai the Jew stands second only to the king, great among his people, accepted of his brethren, seeking their welfare and speaking peace to all his seed. The account ends with a faithful Jew exalted in a foreign court and his people secure, having passed from the edge of annihilation to honor and rest. Though God is never named from the first verse to the last, His unseen providence has preserved the covenant line through which the promised Redeemer would come, keeping His purposes for the world intact.

Historical backdrop

The empire of Xerxes ran from India to Cush, a hundred and twenty-seven provinces governed from the winter palace at Susa, where the story opens with a feast lasting half a year. This was the king who threw the whole weight of Persia against Greece and lost at Salamis, and the Jews of Esther's world were the dispersion who had not gone home to Judah but stayed scattered across the provinces. Everything turns on Persian machinery: the absolute and irrevocable royal decree, the satrapies, and the mounted couriers of the royal road who carried the edicts to every province.
