And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.

The manna in the wilderness was bread from heaven, but it was a type and shadow — those who ate it still died. The bread that Christ gives is His own body, the true bread from heaven, and whoever eats it will live forever. Ambrose also points to the offering of Melchizedek, who brought bread and wine to Abraham, as a prophetic figure of the Eucharistic sacrifice.
