1 Maccabees
Chapter 15
15
What is 1 Maccabees 15 about?
Antiochus VII writes from abroad to confirm Simon's privileges as he lands to wrest the kingdom from Trypho, and Rome sends letters to many lands on the Jews' behalf. Yet once Antiochus gains the upper hand and pens Trypho at Dor, he turns on Simon, demanding the surrender of Joppa, Gazara, and the citadel, or heavy tribute in their place. When Simon refuses and offers only a token payment, Antiochus sends Cendebeus to fortify the frontier and harass Judea. The chapter shows the old pattern returning, a Seleucid king's favor turning to hostility the moment he no longer needs the Jews' help.
