Judith 7
Judith
Chapter 7
7
What is Judith 7 about?
Holofernes brings his whole army against Bethulia, and on the advice of the Edomite and Moabite chiefs he seizes the springs below the town rather than storm its walls, choosing to break the people through thirst. For thirty-four days the siege tightens until the cisterns run dry, and the fainting townsfolk turn on their leaders, demanding surrender so that slavery might at least spare their lives. Uzziah, the chief magistrate, pleads with them to endure five days more, trusting that God will show mercy before then. Their despairing ultimatum, to set a deadline for God Himself, becomes the very failure of faith that Judith will confront and correct.
