The Bible traces a single family line. Genesis 5 lists ten generations from Adam to Noah. Genesis 11 lists ten more from Shem to Abraham. Matthew opens his gospel with fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile, and fourteen from the exile to Christ.
